Growth in the telecoms market during the first quarter of the year was largely down to consumers and businesses in China and India, a new report has revealed.
According to research from TeleGeography, the top 20 global service providers recorded $251 billion in revenue during the period - up 3% from the first quarter of last year but down one per cent on the previous three months.
Many major European economies - including the UK and Germany - saw essentially no growth in mobile subscribers, but India and China saw huge increases in mobile users during the period.
"The global telecoms service market is experiencing a gradual slowdown in growth, caused not by the world economy but by near saturation in many well-developed markets," a statement from the firm explained.
"Historic growth in this market has been over six per cent but TeleGeography forecasts that will drop to an average 3.5% over the next five years."
