Job-seekers leaving university were dealt a further blow yesterday as BT disclosed that it was suspending its graduate recruitment scheme.
The telecoms giant is committed to the 2009 intake of graduates who are due to start next month.
Last year, BT received 4,800 applications for 130 graduate posts.
The company said yesterday: 'In light of the current economic environment and headcount pressures BT has taken the decision to cease graduate recruitment activity and is no longer running a graduate recruitment programme; there is no timeline for re-entry.'
The move comes as fears deepen over the employment prospects for young people. Recent figures showed the number of jobless young people neared one million in the three months to June.
